My book of the week has been 'A Three Dog Life' by Abigail Thomas. I read it in one swoop - a feat which has become increasingly impossible over the years with kids swirling around and demanding food and attention (bah). Abigail writes movingly about her life after her husband Rich suffers a terrible head injury while out walking the dog, from which he never recovers and ultimately needs to have 24 hour care.
The way the author slowly and tentatively builds a life for herself
after the accident, with inevitable triumphs and setbacks along
the way, is mirrored by the journey she takes with her dogs, from
Harry, to Rosie and then Charlotte Bones. Each dog brings new comfort
and personality to the relationship. Each character in the book, canine
and human, is in some way broken and through their interaction with
each other finds a measure of comfort and the courage to simply
continue with the twisty road of life.
Abigail's writing is beautiful - it's never saccharine or overly sentimental, but my heart was aching when I finished it. Highly recommended.
